Many people have been asking me when the new edition of The Photographer’s Guide to Yosemite will be available. Well as I write this an actual, real, physical copy is sitting on my desk. It’s an advance copy, which means it was shipped by air—the rest are on a boat from China, and should be here and on bookshelves in about a month. So the wait is almost over!
The new edition has three new locations, and completely revised and updated information for the entire park. You’ll find new tips specifically designed for digital photography, including Digital Camera Settings, White Balance, Exposure, and HDR and Exposure Blending, plus Depth of Field, Filters, Night Photography, and much more. Most of the 100+ photographs are new too, and the reproductions are excellent—a pleasant surprise for an inexpensive guidebook.
Of course I’ll let you know when the book goes on sale. And if you can’t wait, or prefer the convenience of having all the information in your smart phone or tablet, all the information in the new book is in the iPhone and iPad app.
Thanks to all of you who have purchased The Photographer’s Guide to Yosemite over the years. So many people have taken the time to let me know how much they love the book, and I really appreciate that. I hope you’ll like the new edition just as much!

February light on Bridalveil Fall from near Turtleback Dome
First, I’m going to have a big announcement later this week—stay tuned!
Next, I’ve been getting lots of questions about Horsetail Fall. Since my last post about this not much has changed; there is little water in Horsetail right now. There’s snow in the forecast for tonight and tomorrow, so that should help, but they’re only predicting 6-8 inches, and I don’t know whether that will be enough to make a significant difference. If the weather warms immediately afterward and melts some of that new snow the water volume could get a bump, but it’s likely to be short-lived.
But there are other things to photograph in Yosemite in February. That storm is predicted to be a cold one, which means fresh snow in Yosemite Valley. And when the storm ends we could see some nice clearing storm conditions.

The Photographer’s Guide to Yosemite is now a universal app, built for both iPhone and iPad. The new iPad version takes advantage of the bigger screen to give you easier access to all the information.
Since we were able to make this a single universal app, this iPad-optimized version is a free update for those who have already purchased the app. Just go the app store on your iPad and tap on Updates. The app is fully functional right away, but hi-resolution images for the iPad download when you open the app and connect to Wi-Fi.

Apple just released it’s new operating system (5.0) for iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. Unfortunately the new OS causes problems with The Photographer’s Guide to Yosemite iPhone app. We have already submitted an update to Apple that will fix the problem, but under normal circumstances it takes a week for Apple to approve this, and I suspect they will be inundated with updates to apps, so it could take longer.
So if you’re planning to use the app within the next week or two, the best solution is to not upgrade to iOS5 yet. When you sync your phone (or iPod or iPad) to your computer, if it asks you whether you want to update, click Cancel or Later. If you’ve already upgraded to iOS5, unfortunately there doesn’t seem to be a safe and easy way to go back to iOS4, so you will have to wait for the update to be released.
