The Photographer’s Guide to Yosemite iPhone App is Available Today!

It’s here! The Photographer’s Guide to Yosemite iPhone app is on sale now in the app store. Watch the video to see a demonstration of its features, including:

• In-depth descriptions of 40 outstanding locations including the classic Yosemite Valley views, high country, and surrounding areas.

• Locations Filter—a unique feature that allows you to quickly find the best photo spots for any month and time of day.

• Over 100 stunning photographs show you what you can see at each location.

• Detailed maps and directions.

• Clear, logical layout makes it easy to find the information you need.

• Lots of photography tips to help you capture better images of the park, including Exposure for Digital Cameras, Composition, Depth of Field, HDR and Exposure Blending, Photographing Waterfalls and Cascades, Clearing Storms, and more.

• Sunrise and sunset times, full moon dates, and depth-of-field calculator

• Seasonal Planning Guide helps you find unique photo opportunities for each month.

• Written by a 25-year Yosemite resident and leading expert on photography in Yosemite (that’s me of course!).

• Based on the popular book, The Photographer’s Guide to Yosemite—the bible of Yosemite photography, with 31 out of 36 five-star reviews on Amazon. This app contains all the information in the original book, and much more: three new locations, completely revised and updated information for the entire park, and new tips specifically designed for digital photography.

• Fully functional without an internet connection.

• At only $6.99, it’s cheaper than the book, but with more functionality! And a third of the proceeds from the sale of this app benefit the non-profit Yosemite Conservancy to help fund educational programs, restoration projects, and research in Yosemite National Park.

Download the app here!

Will the app be available for the iPad, or Android phones? Yes, we’re working on both iPad and Android versions, but I don’t yet have a timetable for these.

What about the book? Will it be revised? Yes, a new edition of the book is in the works too, and due out next spring (though delays are common in book publishing).

Please let me know how you like the app—and don’t forget to rate it and write a review in the app store!

  1. Jen Yu says:

Congratulations, Michael! You guys worked so hard on this app and it’s WONDERFUL. Jeremy and I love it – even fought over using it during beta :) I’m so happy to have it with me on my next shoot in Yosemite this year. *yippee!!*

  2. Jeff says:

Nicely done. The book was extremely useful, but the organization coupled with the ease of use and extra guidance will make it a pleasure to use during my trip in October.

  3. Kirk Keeler says:

…just shared the Facebook link on my profile. Congratulations Michael!

  4. heidi says:

Just made my purchase! Absolutely beautiful Michael and uber useful. A work of art in itself.

  5. Michael Frye says:

    Thanks very much everyone!

Jen, glad you like the app, and thanks again for all your help!

Jeff, thanks – glad you like it, and I hope you put it to good use!

    Thanks very much Kirk!

Heidi, thanks so much – I’m very glad you like it!

  6. Alan Smallbone says:

I hope you will make this available for those of us who do not use Apple products. A nice toy but I find little use for one, a small laptop is a lot more useful for me on trips and in the field. I have the book and the updates would be nice to see and have available.

  7. I am absolutely blown away. Your e-mail popped in at 3 PM. Not one more moment of time was spent on work. This is certainly the most complete App for photography I have ever seen, but also the best App I have ever experienced in any topic. You use tools I have never seen before. The App is just in time too. My Photo Guide Book is frayed to the max

  8. Jeremy Mester says:

This looks like a fantastic App. I can’t wait for the Android version to come out. You thought of everything a photographer would need out in the field, even with no cell coverage. This is genious! Thank you for taking the time to develope this and share with all of us!

  9. Michael Frye says:

Alan, the new edition of the book will come out next year, so that will work without an iPhone :)

James, thanks very much! I’m very glad you like app and took the time to let me know. Hope your workload didn’t suffer too much :) If you get a chance to write a review in iTunes I would really appreciate it.

Thanks Jeremy! We’ll try to get that Android version out as soon as possible.

Thanks Brent! I’ll let you know about that.

  14. Tom Kidd says:

Looks great! I’ll be another first day buyer of the Android version.

  15. Wow Michael, your new app is fantastic. I have been using your Guide to Yosemite book for years, the pages are well worn. Your iPhone app has so much to offer and easy to use. I love the ease of navigating through your app. The Filters are really a great tool. I was just in Yosemite this past weekend with your book in hand, I wish I had the app in addition as you have add so much more.
Thanks from all us Yosemite Photography fans.

    Richard

  16. Mike Symmons says:

Michael, your photography is fantastic and your books are very helpful! This new app looks great, will you have it available for us Android users?

Thanks for all the great work,

    Mike

  17. Michael Frye says:

Thanks Tom! We’re working on it:)

Richard, thanks so much for the kind words about the app! Glad you like it, and I hope you put it to good use.

Mike, thanks very much! We’re working on an Android version, but there’s no timetable for it’s release yet.

  18. This is a phenomenal tool, Michael. I can’t wait to go back to Yosemite and try it out!

  19. Michael Frye says:

Thanks Judy – glad you like it, and I hope you get a chance to try it out in Yosemite soon!

  20. Romy says:

lol I bought the book about a month ago!
iPhone is more handy outdoors – so the plan will be to study from the book at home, use the app on place!! :-)

  21. Michael Frye says:

Sounds like a good plan to me Romy! :)

  22. Vivienne says:

This is so timely, Michael! My husband and I are heading to Yosemite at the end of October. We love your book, and have found it to be a valuable resource. I’m going to have to download this soon! :)

  23. Kyle Jones says:

The app looks great Michael. I’ve been a big fan of the book and am looking forward to the new (physical) edition and the android version of the app.

  24. Michael Frye says:

Thanks Vivienne – good timing indeed, and I hope you make good use of it during your visit.

Kyle, thanks, and we’re working on both the revised book and Android version. The Droid version should be out sooner than the book.

  25. Rodney Ninow says:

Very cool, I will for sure buy the Android version when it comes out!

    This looks fabulous Michael! Congrats!
I’m always recommending your book to students who ask me where to shoot in Yosemite. Now I can recommend the app.
Can’t wait for the iPad version for myself :)

    Take care & happy snapping,
    Ellie

  28. Michael Frye says:

Thanks Ellie! iPad version is on the way…

  29. Eric Jaeger says:

Michael, this is one of the best thought-out guide apps I’ve seen. And thanks as well for the shout-out to the Yosemite Conservancy.
    -eric

  30. Michael Frye says:

Eric, thank you very much – I really appreciate that! YC is actually the publisher, as they are for the book version, although me and a friend who did the coding and development were the main movers and shakers behind making the app a reality.

Michael this is a dream app for photographers.

Actually you’ve made it too easy! Yosemite will crowded now more than ever!

I’m afraid we’ll never see a unique photo of Yosemite again! The magician has shown what’s up his sleeve!

Seriously, this looks very cool. Can’t wait to try it!

BTW, I’m honored to say YC is using my Vernal Fall image on rack cards for their “Dollar A Night” program.

  33. Michael Frye says:

Thanks very much Rich – glad you like it! And I hope that photographers will always use their imaginations and find unique images, guide or no guide. Congratulations on having YC pick your image for their card!

Going to the park next month. Will the revised photography book or iPad app be out soon? Thanks

    • Michael Frye says:

Doris, the revised book will be available in about a month, but I don’t have an exact date. The iPad app has been available since last fall – you can click the links here, or go to the iTunes store and search for “Yosemite” or “Yosemite photo.”

  39. Bruce Travis says:

You have the aps on your page for iphone for Yosemite. Will these work on a computer? I do not have one of thoes fancy iphones. Thanks

  40. Robt says:

Hi there just wanted to give you a quick heads up and let you
know a few of the images aren’t loading correctly. I’m not sure why but
I think its a linking issue. I’ve tried it in two different web browsers and both show the same results.

Will be at Yosemite in June and looking forward to using the tip and directions. Looks great. Thank you!
