The dogwoods in Yosemite Valley are nearing their photographic peak. Although some are still in that green stage, most are now in full bloom, yet haven’t leafed out yet. I made the photo above last Friday near the Ahwahnee Hotel.
The waterfalls got a big boost from Friday’s night’s rain. Although the predicted minor flooding never materialized, the falls and meadows are full of water. In short, it’s a great time for photography in the Valley.
I have been following your blog recently because some friends and I have planned to go to Yosemite this weekend. Luckily, it seems that we’ve picked a great weekend to go with the Dogwoods blooming and the moonbow this weekend. We are all first-timers to Yosemite and are also all amateur photographers. Where do the dogwoods bloom in Yosemite. What areas do you recommend exploring to see them? Any other recommendations this time of year?

There are no great secret dogwood locations – they’re mostly obvious as you drive around Yosemite Valley. Make sure you check out the Ahwahnee and Curry Village areas.
As I mentioned in a previous post, Vernal, Nevada, and Bridalveil Falls all receive nice late-afternoon light, and you can see rainbows on them all too. Try to get a copy of my Photographer’s Guide to Yosemite – the Ansel Adams Gallery (209-372-4413) may still have some.
