May 27 (eve.) – May 31, 2019 (four days plus one evening)

Where does the workshop take place?

This workshop is based at the Requa Inn in Klamath, California, in the heart of the redwood country. It’s about 60 miles north of Eureka and 19 miles south of Crescent City. I won’t know the exact destinations for our field sessions until assessing the conditions immediately prior to the workshop, but possible locations include Prairie Creek, Del Norte Coast, and Jedediah Smith redwoods state parks, Redwood National Park, Patrick’s Point State Park, and other areas along the coast.

When does the workshop begin and end?

We’ll start with an introduction and short instruction session at the Requa Inn beginning at 5 p.m. on Monday evening, May 27th, followed by one of the inn’s wonderful dinners. We plan to go from sunrise to sunset on Tuesday through Friday, with short classroom sessions and breaks in the middle of the day, and check out of the inn on Saturday morning, June 1st. Our aim is to get you to great photo locations throughout the workshop, so the exact schedule may change to take advantage of the weather and conditions.

Transportation

Participants must provide their own transportation to and from the Requa Inn. It’s about a six-hour drive north of San Francisco. The nearest airport is in Crescent City, California (airport code CEC); driving time is about 30 minutes. Arcata Airport (ACV) is 60 miles south of the inn. Rental cars are available at both airports. We might be able to pick you up at the Crescent City airport, but can’t guarantee this. During the workshop we’ll carpool to our field locations – we’ll discuss these arrangements at the introductory session.

Equipment

Whatever camera you normally use will probably be just fine. A digital SLR or advanced mirrorless camera is ideal, but a compact digital camera could work if it has full manual controls and Raw mode. You’ll want to have a selection of lenses from wide angle to short telephoto (or zooms that cover that range). A sturdy tripod is a must. We’ll send you a complete list of things to bring prior to the workshop.

Experience

This workshop is suitable for photographers of all levels except real beginners. You should have a good understanding of technical fundamentals like exposure, shutter speed, aperture, and depth of field.

Hiking

The best spots to photograph redwoods aren’t right by the road, so some moderate hiking will be required. We may also need to traverse slippery, muddy trails, and climb over driftwood logs to reach some of the rocky coastal beaches. The most difficult hike we anticipate doing is four miles roundtrip, with a steep 1100-foot climb (though you don’t need to hike the whole length to get to the best photo spots). Lodging

We’ve reserved the beautiful, historic Requa Inn for this workshop, and lodging for five nights (Monday through Friday nights) is included in the tuition. Every room in the inn is different – that’s part of the charm. Some rooms are larger, or have river views, so they’re more expensive, and that’s why the exact fee for the workshop depends on your room choice and availability. Room choices are first-come, first served, so the earlier you sign up for the workshop the more choices you’ll have. We’ll lay out all the details when you register.

Meals

Restaurant choices in Klamath are limited, but the food at the Requa Inn is wonderful, so we’ve arranged to have most of our meals there, and the inn will even cater to our irregular photography schedule (and to special diets). All meals during the workshop, from Monday evening through Saturday morning, are included in the tuition.

Phone and Internet

This is a beautiful yet remote area, so cell phone service is limited in Klamath and most of the redwood country. Verizon works at the Requa Inn, but AT&T does not. The inn has a wireless internet connection and wi-fi, so you’ll be able to check your email and do some web surfing, but the bandwidth won’t allow watching videos or downloading software.

Deposit

A $600 deposit reserves your space in the workshop. The balance is due 90 days before the workshop (don’t worry, we’ll remind you!).

Cancellation

We know you’ll enjoy this workshop and learn a great deal, but should you need to cancel for any reason we will refund your tuition (or deposit) in full up to 60 days prior to the start of the workshop. Should you need to cancel within 45 to 59 days we will refund your tuition less a $150.00 cancellation fee. Refunds are not available less than 45 days prior to the workshop unless we can fill the vacancy, in which case you’ll be charged a $150 cancellation fee. If you do need to cancel we ask that you let us know as soon as possible so we can alert people on the waiting list.

In the rare event that we need to cancel this workshop because of lack of enrollment or an unforeseen event you will receive a complete refund or credit toward a future workshop. We recommend that you avoid purchasing non-refundable airline tickets, and consider getting trip cancellation insurance.
