Nature photographers learn not to rely on planning. There are too many variables, including light, weather, wind, and jet trails. Making landscape images requires a flexible mind, so that when your plan inevitably fails you can look around and see what’s really there, instead of what you were hoping to find.
But once in awhile a plan works. I consulted sun and moon tables to figure out when the moon would be in this position, setting over Middle Gaylor Lake and the Cathedral Range at dawn. My wife Claudia and I got up at 3:30 a.m. to hike over the ridge and be in position, and miraculously the sky was clear, the lake was calm, and there were no jet trails.
